Howdy, everybody! This thread is to keep the discussion going about creating, planning, attending, or heckling the 2013 Homer International CITO event. So far, I have put just enough thought into creating a CITO event for the International CITO project here in Homer. It will be a full week before the HOWL/City of Homer cleanup (Launches on April 29), so I was thinking it would concentrate of a section of beach for cleanup. Feel free to weigh in, and talk all about getting this event going!

Here is the update I just received on the official Homer clean up day - which will be two weeks after the International CITO weekend. Most folks focus on parts of town or their own roads, so a beach event would be fun. Have you had any more concrete thoughts on it yet? :-)
"May 4, 10a-3pm, Clean Up Day & Anniversary Celebration. Help clean up Homer and then drop off your bags of trash and recycling at the Homer Chamber/Visitor Center and get some free cake in celebration of Big Brothers Big Ssiters' 40th anniversary in Alaska! The chamber is offering prizes for most trash/recycling bags. Free trash bags will be available at the Chamber staring April 29th. 235-7740 for more info on Clean Up day. This event is free and open to the public."

Well, I noticed that the harbor is pretty icky. That might be a good place to start. Otherwise, Bishop's Beach isn't a bad place to clean up...but my last walk there didn't bring any really bad trash to my attention. The harbor was really bad.
We could do the Harbor for the International day, and then have another/more CITO or regular Events in conjunction with the Homer cleanup?

I don't think it would be a bad idea to have an event in conjunction with the Homer cleanup day. I think with the support of Maya at the Chamber, it would be nice to have the ability for cachers to get involved from farther up the road. (wink, wink)
I'm going to get something set up for the weekend of the International CITO day. I do think we'll be tidying up around the west side of the harbor around the ramps, etc. More news to come!

Oh fizzlesticks, I was at the Chamber this week and forgot to ask about trash bags. I'll make a note to do it when I'm back there this week!
I think the harbor sounds like a great idea, especially doing it before Shorebird weekend. I think a lot of folks pick up trash when they walk Bishop's Beach, so it is always getting a light cleanup.

Working out the kinks with the Alaska Maritime NWR folks for a cleanup on 4/20 at Islands and Ocean. Pencil it in! Come on down, the kings are biting!
Any cleanup at Islands and Ocean is now out of the question. They do not want to have any cleanup here, due to the fact that there are so many cleanup events in Homer on the horizon. I'm back to the drawing board for a location.

What happened to the harbor idea? How about the area around Mud Spit/Bay?

I'm back to the drawing board for a location. Well, that was fun! What a difference a couple of days makes! I let the idea sink in, and it has been clarified that I&O (Alaska Maritime NWR) doesn't want to formally host an event. We are more than welcome to have a cleanup on their grounds on April 20, so long as we are self-sufficient. I think that they didn't want to have their name on anything that might go out as publicity on their email newsletters or whatever. So, I'm getting the CITO Event page up and running soon. Watch your notifications, and here, for the event listing.

Nicely done, neversummer! I like the cache page too. The use of our trackable nametag brings attention to something that needs more rah rah attention too.

Cathy, I've been called in for an interview that will take me out of town over the weekend. I will make sure that supplies are available for clean up if you might still come, or if we think others might show.
If you can't adopt, I'll archive it.
Apologies, all.

Hey Joel - sorry I missed your post on that event. I have been running ragged for the past week and haven't been checking in. My schedule is crazy Saturday (differently crazy than a normal Saturday), so I can only be there for a short bit. Glad you got it adopted over to I&O! I'm happy to hear that you've got an interview. I'm not happy to hear that it is taking you out of town. Good luck to you regardless!
