Howdy, all! Just wanted to toss out a quick plea as a cache owner:
We've likely seen it all the time. A cache that is out in the open, or clearly is out of its original hidey-hole. This brings up the dreaded consequence...a muggled cache.
After just 24 hours of being in place, I lost a temporary cache at our event on March 2. The last finder confirmed with me that they didn't know where it was supposed to go, and they left it close to where they thought it should be. Lo and behold, I walked down to find the container missing, just 3 hours after the last finder.
So, just a reminder to be sure to replace caches as you found them, or better. Sometimes the camo wears off, the pile of sticks goes missing, or something of the sort. Be sure to note anything that seems out of sorts when you log a cache, rather than just an old "TNLNSL, TFTC" and moving on. I'd love it if you did, and I'm sure others would be happy to know their cache might need a check-up.

Yes, and when caching with a group, the finder should be the replacer, so the cache is replaced exactly as originally found.
When I find a muggled cache, I reassemble things as best I can and tuck the cache out of sight. If I'm uncertain about where the cache was originally hidden, I'll take a photo of where I hid the cache and offer to sent it to the Cache Owner when I sent them an e-mail through their profile if they provide me their e-mail address in response.

I would caution on the part of hiding it BETTER. If it's obviously out in the open and not where it should be, then hiding it better is OK. But hiding it better because the finder thought it would be better like THIS, is not acceptable.
If it's obviously not in the right spot than a simple "It was in the open so I placed it where I thought it should be", should be enough to get the CO checking on it's placement.

I figured this phrase might be cause for alarm. What I mean is, that if you find a cache in the open, and its ratings would imply that it shouldn't be, it is better to hide better to keep it from being muggled. Then, always email the owner. I can't tell you how thankful I've been when a cache has migrated into the open, and someone hides it so that I have some extra time to get to it to rehide properly. So yes, better, but with a caveat!

Ha! Remember the last time I hid a cache "better?" Took a phone a friend for the next guy to find it... After I brought it back!

Here's the original telling: Geocache ChallengeThis one won't go away because the perp keeps bringing it up.

I think we all knew what you meant Never Summer, I only wanted to clarify and state the obvious for everyone. This is a great thread and i hope everyone is reading along.

Really? Tell us the story... There was this shadowy figure in a nearby truck, and a friend along with me... See how easy it is to distract me?

Just wrapped up all but 1 cache for a fall maintenance sweep. I was not surprised by some of the migration, but many were right out in the open. One of my caches (which was in a great spot with low likelyhood of being muggled) was actually found on a trail and then posted on the bushlines reading on our local public radio station. "Kids pencil box found, with some small toys, a pen, and small notebook with writing..."
The caches that were not muggled were not rehidden well at all. I guess this means I'll have to check on them more often during peak season!
