Please post your questions about the cache review process, the Groundspeak reviewer's role, or any concerns you may have in this thread. I will reply prompty. I have been reviewing new caches in Alaska since August, 2010, using my Greatland Reviewer account. You may already know me through my player account as Ladybug Kids.

What is the difference between a GeocacheAlaska! Board of Directors role and a Groundspeak Reviewer role?A member of the GeocacheAlaska!, Inc., Board of Directors, is committed to geocacher education and land manager advocacy to assure access to local, state, and federal public lands for local geocachers. A Groundspeak Reviewer reviews submitted caches for compliance with Groundspeak's guidelines following a well-defined process. An overview of this process will be presented at the Groundspeak Reviewer FUNdamentals Event," on Thursday, December 16. The presentation materials will be postedon the GeocacheAlaska! Education webpage shortly afterwards.

How many other Groundspeak Reviewers are also involved with their local organizations?
In a poll of reviewers conducted in August/September 2010, 26% responded they serve as a officer of their local organization, 12% serve as a member-at-large, 5% serve as an officer at the chapter level, and 16% serve is some other capacity.
30% are not involved with the local organization and 12% review in a location that does not have a local organization.
The total slightly exceeds 100% due to rounding of the percentages.

Can Groundspeak Reviewers pursue a FTF?
The Code of Conduct for Groundspeak Volunteers states:
"USE OF UNPUBLISHED INFORMATION: BEING FIRST TO FIND Volunteers will not use unpublished information supplied for cache review to their advantage in finding caches, nor will they intentionally share this information with others. Unpublished information includes, for example, the intermediate and final waypoints of multicaches, and the solutions to puzzle caches. Volunteers may be first to find any traditional cache after it is published on the Geocaching.com website. To avoid the appearance of impropriety, Volunteers will refrain from seeking unfound caches of other types which they have published, for a period of seven days from the date when such a cache is published on the Geocaching.com website."
Simply put, once the cache listing is published and the instant notifications have gone out, it's "game on!" except for puzzles and multi-caches.

This is gonna be a great avenue for information exchange! Yeehaw! I would even suggest we send an e-mail blast to the membership announcing the venue.

I will also be reviewing Earthcaches for Alaska, Hawaii, and US Territories as GeoawareUSA4. Don't hesitate to ask any earthcaching related questions in these forums or via e-mail to my profile. A good place to start for information about earthcaches is to visit the Geological Society of America website for links to the earthcaching guidelines, cache page banners, and their store.

Query: Can a Flashmob Event be used as a precursor to a "secular" event as long as there is no requirement that a cacher remain after the end of the Flashmob?

Query: Can a Flashmob Event be used as a precursor to a "secular" event as long as there is no requirement that a cacher remain after the end of the Flashmob? That can work. One does need to be careful not to mention a commercial "secular" organization/business because Groundspeak does not like to provide free advertising through their free cache listing service.

NorhtWes and I were trying to come up with a carrot to bring in the local geocachers for our outreach/philanthropic efforts. This may work!

There's a nice feature about the role of the cache reviewer in the Groundspeak blog.
