I learned this evening how to map a path on GoogleEarth and transfer it as a track to my GPS using MapSource. The process is pretty useful for looking at the satellite imagery, picking out the trail(s) one wants, creating a track, and taking it with you without having to print a hard copy. 1. Download the free version of Google Earth (GE). These instructions are written for GE 5.1.3509.4636 (beta). 2. Download the free version of GPSBabel from www.gpsbabel.org/. 3. Launch GE. Zoom/fly to your area of interest. 4. Choose Add, Path, and enter the name of the path you are creating. 5. Move your cursor over the GE satellite image. The cursor will turn into a square with cross hairs. Center the cursor over your start point and click your mouse button. Then click along your desired route. You may pan the satellite image using the icons on the right-hand side of the screen if your path extends beyond the edges. When your complete route is highlighted, click "OK" to save your path to "My Places" on the left-hand sidebar. 6. Click on the path in "my places." Left click, "save place as" to save the file as a kml file to your hard drive. 7. Lauch GPSBabel by clicking on the GPSBabelGUI application file. 8. Select the kml file you just created as the input file and specify the kml file type. 9. For the output file, select GPX XML, your destination folder, and your output file name. Click "Let's go" to generate the GPX file. 10. Launch Garmin MapSend or Training Center, available on Garmin's website if it didn't come with your Garmin Topo or other software. 11. File, Open, the GPX file you created with GPSBabel in Step #9 to view your route.

You may view your Garmin track logs and waypoints on Google Earth (GE) by: 1. Upload your track logs and waypoints to Garmin MapSource. 2. File, Save As, File Name, type GPS eXchange format. 3. Launch GE. 4. File, Open, the File Name you created in step #2 above. You may also load the GPX files from Blazingpathway's South Central DeLorme Challenge and view the grids on GE. This is especially handy if you've downloaded the GE Geocache Viewer Plug-in.
