Demonstrating excellence in his academic endeavors (to balance his already-acknowledged geocaching, XC running & XC skiing excellence - and musical talent), Knappling has been named as East High School's sole National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
From the Anchorage School District press release dated 9-16-09 (with my emphasis):
More than 1.5 million juniors from about 22,000 high schools nationwide entered the 2010 program by taking the 2008 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The semifinalists, which represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, include the highest scoring entrants from each state.
To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an exemplary academic record, receive an endorsement by the school principal, and score well on the SAT. Each semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application which includes a self-descriptive essay and information about the student's participation and leadership in school and community activities.
Twenty-eight high school seniors in the Anchorage School District are semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program. These students, along with 11 other students statewide, will continue in the nationwide competition for 8,200 awards worth more than $36 million.
Sincere congratulations are extended to you for such excellence. It's an achievement definitively worthy of acclaim!

Nice job Knappling, way to move those feet. Keep on trucking, there is an open road in front of you, run like the wind.
